The essence

Nearventure helps you come up with a short adventure next to where you are. I set a starting point, a time budget and a way of travelling, choose interests — natural places, cultural heritage, museums or unusual objects — and get a route that can genuinely be walked or ridden in that time. The result can be taken away as GPX and used in any navigator.

The project grew out of a very personal need: I like cycling trips, but I do not want to hunt for points by hand every time, estimate the mileage and assemble a new loop. I need a tool in the spirit of: “Here are 40 kilometres through a lake and an abandoned church — get on and ride.”

What already works

  • a web application with a map, a catalogue of POI, isochrones and route building;
  • manual and automatic selection of points within a given time budget;
  • seven travel profiles: from a car to a scenic walk and MTB;
  • export of a route to GPX;
  • a Telegram bot and a Mini App with the same domain logic;
  • a catalogue of the entire Volga Federal District: 14 federal subjects and 32,459 objects according to the public version;
  • an open data pipeline with the provenance and the attribution of every field.

Why this continues earlier experience

In the project “я.ты.город.” I looked for places myself, built routes, travelled there and documented local journeys. Nearventure turns that experience into a tool for others: not “look where I went” but “get a route and set off yourself”.

It also connects with MetaVyatka and “Protected Vyatka 360°”: a trip can become a way not only to see a place but also to contribute to open data, to take a photograph, to make a sound recording or to create a digital trace of an object.

Technology and principles

The project is built on Vue 3, Tailwind and shadcn-vue in the front end; MapLibre GL and Protomaps are responsible for the map; NestJS 11, PostgreSQL, PostGIS and pgvector handle the API, the data and the geo search; GraphHopper 11 builds routes and elevation; grammY is used in the Telegram bot, while a Python pipeline collects and links POI. The web app, the bot, the Mini App and the API use a single capabilities layer, so the logic of finding points and building routes is not duplicated.

Nearventure works with open data from OpenStreetMap, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage and ЕГРКН. For images and descriptions the source, the licence and the attribution are preserved. This is not only a technical constraint but also part of the idea of citizen science: a journey can improve the shared map and the digital memory of a place.

Now

The project has left the stage of a hidden prototype and works as a public beta. The next question is no longer “can a route be built” but “does the route turn out to be genuinely interesting and convenient on a real trip”.
